Where Tradition Meets Fashion: The Story Behind Yass Art

For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to traditional Persian calligraphy. There is something extraordinary about the movement of the letters—the way a single line can carry poetry, history, emotion, and centuries of culture.

After living in the United States for more than 30 years, my connection to this beautiful art form has only grown stronger. But over time, I began to wonder: How could I introduce Persian calligraphy to people who may have never seen it before?

Not only to Iranians.

Not only to those who can read Persian.

But to anyone, anywhere, who can appreciate the beauty of art.

A Language You Don’t Have to Read

One of the things I love most about Persian calligraphy is that you don’t have to understand the words to experience it.

The curves, rhythm, balance, and movement have their own visual language. A person may not know what a particular word or verse means, yet still be captivated by its form.

I wanted to preserve that traditional beauty while allowing it to live in a new world—my world, here in America.

When My Two Loves Met

I have also always loved fashion and the idea that what we wear can express something about who we are.

Eventually, my love of traditional Persian calligraphy and my love of fashion found each other.

I began imagining calligraphy beyond paper and canvas—on clothing, jewelry, accessories, and objects we live with every day. A handwritten verse could become part of a jacket. A Persian word could become a piece of wearable art. Centuries-old artistic traditions could walk down a modern street.

And somewhere in that meeting of tradition and contemporary life, Yass Art was born.

Carrying the Past Forward

My intention has never been to replace traditional Persian calligraphy or change what makes it extraordinary. Quite the opposite.

I want to honor it.

But I also believe traditions remain alive when we continue to interact with them, reinterpret them, and introduce them to new generations and new audiences.

Through Yass Art, I hope someone who has never encountered Persian calligraphy might stop because they find a design beautiful—and then become curious about the culture, poetry, and history behind it.

If that happens, even for one person, then a little piece of this extraordinary artistic tradition has traveled somewhere new.

That, to me, is what Yass Art is about: carrying something I love from my heritage into the present—and sharing it with the world.
